Lipponen nopeampi englanniksi kuin suomeksi
Sdp:n presidenttiehdokas Paavo Lipponen esiintyi omaan rauhalliseen tyyliinsä MTV3:n Huomenta Suomen englanninkielisessä tentissä.
Tenttaajana toiminut uutistoimisto AP:n skandinavian kirjeenvaihtaja David Mac Dougall arvoi Lipposen englanninkielen taitoa hyväksi, mutta kiinnitti huomiota hitaaseen puherytmiin - vaikka se onkin nopeampaa englanniksi kuin suomeksi.
Tässä Mac Dougallin arvio:
As an elder statesman of Finnish politics, Paavo Lipponen is no stranger to speaking English to an international audience.
Lipponen says he decided to run for president after seeing a worrying shift in Finland's attitudes towards immigrants, foreigners, the EU and even Swedish-speaking Finns - something he would try to change if he was elected as Head of State.
Mr Lipponen studied in the US, and has lead Finland's presidency of the European Union during his time as Prime Minister. So in technical terms, he speaks very good English and can easily handle complex policy issues in a foreign language with ease.
However, he has a reputation as a considered - even slow - Finnish speaker and he admits he's been told that before. However, Lipponen's English is faster than his Finnish, and he appreciates that in a fast-paced media world, with a 24/7 news cycle and profusion of social media, he has to speak more quickly to get his points across effectively.
