Nearly 60 years of unforgettable experiences

When MTV was first launched in 1957, it only broadcast commercials and all its broadcasts were live. The first foreign TV series were aired in the 1960s.

Broadcasting TV series was challenging at first, because the air time that MTV was allocated by the Finnish Broadcasting Company was not sufficient for showing both TV series and the agreed commercials. The situation improved when the Finnish Broadcasting Company agreed to give MTV more air time.

TV series became more established in MTV’s programming in the course of the 1960s with regular showings of programmes such as the family comedies The Life of Riley and Lassie, the action crime series Highway Patrol and The Third Man as well as the cartoons Felix the Cat and The Heckle and Jeckle Show. The children’s western TV series The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin also became hugely popular and was ultimately dubbed in Finnish.

Several popular Finnish programmes such as Levyraati, the comedy series Hanski as well as the quiz show Tupla tai kuitti also first aired in the ’60s. The celebrated Finnish comedy trio Spede Pasanen, Vesa-Matti Loiri and Simo Salminen began to collaborate towards the end of the ’60s and numerous comedy shows produced by the trio, such as Spede-Show, Spede-Visio, Speden Saluuna, Vesku Show, Speden Spelit and the Uuno films, entertained Finns for several decades.
